The Otaru Canal, a tourist attraction in Otaru, was a port facility for unloading cargo that was completed in 1923. In 1986, it was reborn as it is today, with walking paths and parks.

It consists of four facilities: the Stained Glass Museum, the Former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch, the Nitori Museum, and the Museum of Western Art. The former Japanese National Railways Temiya Line was the first railway line to open in Hokkaido in 1880, but it ceased operation in 1985 and is now a 1.6 km walking trail that is loved by locals and tourists alike.
The main building displays Hokkaido's most famous trains, including the steam locomotive "Shizuka." Outside, you can see the "Old Temiya Railway Facility," an important cultural property, and experience a free ride on the "Iron Horse" (only in summer). The Canal Museum occupies the former Otaru Warehouse built in 1893. It introduces the history of Otaru as a prosperous commercial city, and its development through two parts: its natural landscapes, and the natural scenery created by the sea and mountains. You can see dioramas of natural scenery and a reproduction of the streetscape from the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period.
This is Jodo-ji Temple, located on a hill overlooking the sea of Otaru. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and in autumn, the leaves sparkle, welcoming you with a variety of flowers and trees. Limited edition goshuin stamps are also available during the cherry blossom and autumn leaves seasons.
Temiya Park is a park with an ocean view that takes advantage of the sloping terrain unique to Otaru, and is a popular spot for strolls and hikes among locals, where you can enjoy cherry blossom and azalea viewing in the spring, and chestnut gathering in the fall.
It was the first private home in Hokkaido to be designated a cultural property, designated a "Hokkaido Tangible Cultural Property: Herring Fishing Ground Architecture." Inside Herring Mansions (Nishin Goten), there are exhibits of tools used for herring fishing and processing, as well as everyday items and photographs of the people who lived in the guardhouse.
The exhibits are centered on creatures from Jeonbuk. In the marine mammal park that divides the ocean, you can see lively sea lions and seals up close. You can see wolffish, giant halibut, and the mythical fish, the huchen. You can also enjoy performances by bottlenose dolphins.
Otaru Mt. Tengu is a symbolic mountain of Otaru, standing at 532m above sea level. From the observation deck at the summit, you can get a panoramic view of Otaru city and Ishikari Bay, and at night you can enjoy a beautiful night view that is said to be one of the "Three Great Night Views of Hokkaido." In winter, we also have a variety of rental items available for you to enjoy playing in the snow, such as sleds.
